College of Technology Tackling Supply Chain Risks

Recent cyberattacks, including SolarWinds and Log4j, have heightened the urgency for software supply chain management. In response, the College of Technology is upping the game by offering new courses and certificates for undergraduate and graduate students to provide them with the skills needed to secure the supply chain.

Dr. James Fraley, who chairs the MSIST-Information Assurance Program, notes more than 10,000 available jobs in the region in Cloud and IT security. “We have employers coming to us who need people who are trained for these positions,” he says.

That’s resulted in a 39-percent increase in students seeking a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Certificate, which focuses on protecting critical infrastructure. COT’s new Cloud Security Certification allows students to dive deeper into Amazon Web Services (AWS).

WilmU’s information assurance and cybersecurity programs teach students to understand, assess and plan for cyber software risks across various organizations.

“Students learn the basics of contingency planning, disaster recovery, and business continuity,” Dr. Fraley says. “Other courses take students deeper into understanding cyberattacks, assessing cyber threat intelligence, performing cyber incident response, and evaluating risks at the system and enterprise level. Digital Forensics allows students to understand how malware works and determine its origination. Clearly, this is a growing field.”
