In May 2026, as many Wilmington University graduates walked across the commencement stage to receive their diplomas, Kaitlyn Sommer was walking down a different aisle. Her wedding date had been planned months before the University finalized the commencement schedule, and the two celebrations fell on the same day. Sommer faced a decision familiar to so many nurses: balancing life’s most meaningful moments with deep professional commitment.
Sommer earned her master’s degree in Nursing Leadership through countless hours of study between clinical shifts, demonstrating the perseverance shared by many of our graduate nursing students. Along the way, she developed the leadership skills our healthcare system needs most — guiding teams through uncertainty, advocating for patients and colleagues, and leading with confidence, compassion and integrity.
Sommer was unable to attend commencement, but her achievement was no less significant. She didn’t have to choose between celebrating her marriage and celebrating her academic success. She accomplished both during one extraordinary season of life, honoring each milestone in its own special way.
In collaboration with the President’s Office, Wilmington University surprised Sommer by presenting her with a framed diploma at her wedding reception, ensuring that her academic achievement was celebrated alongside one of life’s most memorable occasions.
Marked by both a wedding celebration and an academic milestone, Sommer’s story reflects the determination, dedication, and resilience of WilmU graduates who continue to move forward through life’s most defining milestones.
