Dr. Genesis Johnson

Dr. Genesis Johnson’s story shows the difference a Wilmington University scholarship can make.

She recently earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership, building on the bachelor’s and master’s degrees she previously completed at WilmU. Her journey was shaped by responsibility, resilience, and a commitment to education.

In remarks delivered at Wilmington University’s Annual Scholarship Golf Classic, Dr. Johnson reflected on the challenges she faced, the support that helped her continue, and the gratitude she carries for the donors who believed in her.

These are her words.

My name is Genesis Johnson, and I am a proud Wilmington University scholarship recipient.

I stand before you today filled with gratitude and humility. I know that your lives are full, your responsibilities are many, and your time is valuable. Yet, because of your generosity and your belief in the power of education, you have made it possible for students like me to continue pursuing dreams that might otherwise feel out of reach. Thank you for investing in Wilmington University — and, through that investment, in me.

I am a proud alumna of Wilmington University, having earned both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees here. I’ve spent the past 10 years as a teacher, and caring for others has always been at the center of who I am, whether I am caring for my students or my family. In the summer of 2023, I took the next step in my journey and began pursuing my doctorate in Educational Leadership.

But my journey has not been a simple one.

In June 2024, my life changed in an instant when I was granted emergency custody of my newborn granddaughter. She was born six weeks prematurely and experienced withdrawal symptoms during her first months of life. I had to make a decision: bring her home with me or allow her to enter state custody. There was no real choice. I brought her home.

Since then, the challenges have continued. In November 2024, I underwent surgery to remove a tumor from my liver. More recently, my husband was diagnosed with kidney failure and must begin dialysis as he awaits a transplant. These medical challenges brought significant financial strain. There were times when I truly questioned whether I could continue my education.

At home, I also care for my 12-year-old twins, one of whom is autistic. I am a mother of four adult children, including a set of triplets.

I’m proud to share that I have completed the doctoral program and successfully defended my dissertation, officially becoming Dr. Johnson.

Your generosity is not just financial support; it is hope, opportunity, and a reminder that someone believes in us. Because of donors like you, I was able to continue, persist, and finish what I started.

Earning my doctorate has opened doors for me to step into leadership roles where I can create meaningful change in education, ensuring equity, access, and opportunity for every student. And I promise you, I will carry your investment forward.

Thank you for seeing the value in education. Thank you for believing in perseverance. And most importantly, thank you for believing in students like me.

Because of you, this journey did not end in obstacles; it ended in achievement.
