Lights! Camera! Action!

A woman speaks on a video camera screen. She stands in front of a green screen.

The multimedia studio in the Harry Deppert Learning Commons at Wilson Graduate Center provides students and faculty with the resources to create videos for classes and projects. The studio offers an easy-to-use camera, microphone and lighting system, all available at no charge.

Based on a model at Penn State, the studio reimagines existing infrastructure in libraries, says Russ Lichterman, multimedia manager.

“Libraries are starting to morph from a place where you borrow books to being a technology center,” he says. “It gives students who don’t have a webcam or other multimedia technology an opportunity to walk in and use a device that doesn’t cost them any money.”

The studio also is home to OLET Live! The real-time show, aired on the Online Learning and Educational Technology Facebook group page, airs at lunchtime so adjuncts can tune in and interact with members of the OLET team. Hosts Stephen Scheib, an instructional designer, and Christian Broderick, an educational technologist, bring in guests and discuss a variety of topics of interest to WilmU faculty.  (To watch the show, request access to the group by searching “wilmington university online learning and educational technology” on Facebook.)

Launched as a low-cost pilot, the multimedia center was rolled out in Spring 2017. Based on that success, WilmU hopes to add two more centers, first on the Dover campus, followed by a site at the New Castle campus.

At Wilson, users can book time online in blocks of one or two hours, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday. There’s an interactive calendar on library website, which also includes detailed instructions walking users through the recording process. To reserve time, click on https://hdlc111d.youcanbook.me/

“We keep things very simple and we have ideas to streamline the process even further,” Lichterman says. “And if you need more help, just contact us at multimedia@wilmu.edu.”
