He tells them to \u201cenjoy their nap,\u201d assuring them he will be there when they wake up and throughout the entire process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Gayden earned his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/health\/dnp.aspx#intro\">Doctor of Nursing Practice degree<\/a> at Wilmington University and teaches at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. According to the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program, he\u2019s one of only seven Black male CRNA full-time faculty members nationwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is truly a phenomenal person,\u201d says <strong>Dr. Aaron Sebach<\/strong>, dean of WilmU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/health\/indexh.aspx\">College of Health Professions and Natural Sciences<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s one of the most memorable students I\u2019ve worked with in the doctoral program.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ad2f72ca wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote wu-blockquote-simple is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cA big part of being a nurse anesthetist is to advocate on behalf of the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><em>\u2014 Dr. Johnny Gayden<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The youngest of 13 children, Dr. Gayden grew up in rural Louisiana, losing his mother when he was just 6 years old and then his father, who was a sharecropper, at age 13. His oldest sister raised him with help from other family members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of reasons I could have stopped. There were a lot of times I wanted to stop, but I wanted to be a nurse anesthetist,\u201d says Dr. Gayden, remembering his parents who were \u201cborn in the \u201920s and \u201930s\u201d and didn\u2019t have access to much education. \u201cI think I am achieving many of the dreams they probably wished they could have.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now a parent, Dr. Gayden adopted a newborn as a single dad while studying at WilmU.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my joy,\u201d he says, describing his 4-year-old daughter. \u201cShe keeps me going.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Gayden \u2014 a past president of the Maryland Association of Nurse Anesthetists and president-elect of the Association of Veterans Affairs Nurse Anesthetists \u2014 plans to pursue a doctorate in health policy and hopes to become the dean of nursing at a university.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can be a trailblazer in any profession. It takes determination and grit. Never underestimate the influence you may have on others,\u201d says Dr. Sebach, calling his former student a role model.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen myself as a role model. I have considered myself a mentor,\u201d says Dr. Gayden. \u201cI\u2019m just trying to be a good person and support others,\u201d adding that his goal \u201cis not only to help people but to bring people together.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And his advice is heartfelt: \u201cDon\u2019t give up. Just continue to dream and
