(It\u2019s) truly incredibly valuable,\u201d says Dr. Berke, the director of Wilmington University\u2019s psychology programs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/cps\/\">Center for Prevention Science<\/a>, as well as a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/behavioralscience\/indexs.aspx\">College of Social and Behavioral Sciences<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Job loss, violence, racial injustice, accidents, natural disasters, illnesses \u2014 some degree of trauma affects almost everyone at some point in their lives. That\u2019s why in October 2018, Delaware Gov. <strong>John Carney<\/strong> signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.delaware.gov\/executive-orders\/eo24\/\">executive order<\/a> calling for trauma awareness and training.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the last five years, things have been so chaotic and so divisive that even small things that before people may have been able to manage stress-wise have just been magnified,\u201d Dr. Berke says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show individuals who experience trauma at any age may suffer long-lasting effects. Organizations using a trauma-informed approach promote productivity, resilience, strengths, and healing, and prevent re-traumatization in both employees and clients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ad2f72ca wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote wu-blockquote-simple is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe vision is to help all Delawareans to not just survive but thrive.\u201d<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<cite><em>\u2014 Dr. Debra Berke<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a shift in mindset. It\u2019s a shift in the way we think about approaching and working with individuals,\u201d Dr. Berke says. \u201cIt helps us understand why people might be reacting the way they react (and) how we can be more effective in our interactions with them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.delaware.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/10\/TAM-Report.pdf\">2023 report<\/a> examined the initiative\u2019s effectiveness, giving the state \u201ca comprehensive view of this important work over the last five years \u2014 and where more work needs to be done,\u201d Dr. Berke says. \u201cThe vision is to help all Delawareans to not just survive but thrive.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One key success has been initiating trauma-informed care training at state and outside agencies, such as the Department of Health and Social Services, Department of Labor, Choir School of Delaware, Henrietta Johnson Medical Center and Catholic Charities. Delaware also hosted its fifth annual Trauma Awareness Month and Compassionate Champion Awards, which honor people and organizations excelling at trauma-informed services. Past winners include the Wilmington University team (Dr. Berke, Adjunct Professor <strong>Marilyn Siebold<\/strong> and Adjunct <strong>Dr. Rebecca Ghabour<\/strong>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serving as the \u201cbackbone for trauma work\u201d is <a href=\"https:\/\/traumamattersdelaware.org\/\">Trauma Matters Delaware<\/a>, a nonprofit hub for education and advocacy. Dr. Berke, a board member, joined the organization in its grassroots days.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 <strong>Erin Mitchell<\/strong>, the executive director. \u201cHer expertise, her perspective, her level of intellect really brings a richness to Trauma Matters Delaware.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Berke also leads the Higher Education Workgroup, \u201cequipping our students to be empowered and be able to navigate their journey,\u201d Mitchell says. \u201cHer working group actually produces products that we can use as resources and other schools can look to as models.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilmington University is at the forefront of trauma-informed care, offering an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/behavioralscience\/trauma-informed-certificate.aspx\">Undergraduate Certificate in Trauma-Informed Approaches<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/behavioralscience\/trauma-and-resilience-certificate.aspx\">Graduate Certificate in Trauma and Resilience<\/a> along with training for students, faculty and
