Dr. Stovall, a subject matter expert and graduate of Wilmington University\u2019s Prevention Science doctoral program, will offer insight on the 2018 Jacquelyn Smith murder case. Her husband, Keith Smith, murdered her but tried to blame panhandlers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Stovall is a Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions postdoctoral fellow. He understands violence that affects families because he lived it, and his childhood experiences in West Philadelphia inspired him to make a difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI grew up around individuals who were impacted by different family traumatic experiences that led them to a lifestyle of criminogenic behavior \u2014 individuals who were drug dealers, individuals who stole cars, things of that nature,\u201d Dr. Stovall says. \u201cOne of my close friends, who lived on my grandmother\u2019s block, was murdered because he sold a fake product of cocaine.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Stovall met a medical examiner at the murder scene, and it changed the course of his life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.kb-image5443_d80ae5-16 .kb-image-has-overlay:after{opacity:0.3;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5443_d80ae5-16\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Wilmington-University-Dr-Hakim-Stovall-1.jpg\" class=\"kb-img wp-image-14119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Wilmington-University-Dr-Hakim-Stovall-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Wilmington-University-Dr-Hakim-Stovall-1-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Wilmington-University-Dr-Hakim-Stovall-1-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Hakim Stovall being filmed on the set of \u201cFatal Attraction.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI built a relationship with him along with other colleagues at the Philadelphia Medical Examiner\u2019s [Office],\u201d says Dr. Stovall. \u201cThey would provide me with the opportunity to work as a clerk in their Fatality Review Unit. I worked there from the age of 16, moving around to different spots within that program.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After studying Criminal Justice in college and earning a master\u2019s degree, Dr. Stovall helped many people through his work in youth rehabilitation, adult corrections, reentry advocacy, community support, and COVID outreach. In 2022, he returned to the Medical Examiner\u2019s Office \u2014 this time in Washington, D.C., as a fatality review program specialist. That training caught the attention of TV One and Johns Hopkins.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe liked his experience in D.C.\u2019s Medical Examiner\u2019s Office doing fatality reviews because we believe that such reviews, if done right with commitments from city agencies, can be a foundation for data-driven problem-solving,\u201d says Bloomberg Professor of American Health <strong>Dr. Daniel Webster<\/strong>, who is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions. \u201cWe valued Hakim\u2019s professional experience in corrections and his ability to apply his lived experience to understand community violence and racial biases in the criminal legal system.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Stovall compares his postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins to a medical doctor completing a residency. He\u2019s sharpening his research skills and expanding his knowledge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about solutions to gun violence, we have to understand that it\u2019s going to take time; that this isn\u2019t a one-pill solution,\u201d Dr. Stovall says. \u201cThe way our society is changing with the impact of social media and how technology has emerged over recent years \u2014 that we have to introduce new and innovative ideas that would coincide with the old and traditional ways of how things have gone within the realm of public safety.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about solutions to gun violence, we have to understand that it\u2019s going to take time; that this isn\u2019t a one-pill solution.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<cite>\u2014 <em>Dr. Hakim Stovall<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>WilmU professors applaud Dr. Stovall\u2019s success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe understands that creating policies and focusing on the total community is really the way to embrace prevention,\u201d says Prevention Science Program Chair Dr. Shawn Stevens. \u201cHis growth has been tremendous.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Stovall says he appreciates the \u201clove and support of Wilmington University.\u201d When his postdoctoral fellowship is completed, he hopes to pursue outreach and partnerships, he adds, \u201cto have a representation of a black male working within communities of color to be able to advocate, in a sense, and translate information that different walks of life may not be too familiar with.
