One of my recent favorites is&nbsp;\u2018Women\u2019s Work:&nbsp;The First 20,000 Years\u2019&nbsp;by&nbsp;<strong>Elizabeth Wayland&nbsp;Barber<\/strong>.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;about prehistoric technological innovations in textiles.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Study Literature?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WilmU&#8217;s&nbsp;18-credit Literature&nbsp;minor&nbsp;covers a range of&nbsp;cultures,&nbsp;times&nbsp;and voices&nbsp;to&nbsp;help students&nbsp;develop textual analysis and communication&nbsp;skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmerican Literature (LIT 336) is taught from a cultural perspective, so students learn about the history that is such a direct part of most American literature,\u201d&nbsp;she&nbsp;says.&nbsp;\u201cWe&#8217;re a&nbsp;pragmatic people and often write with a purpose besides entertainment, like&nbsp;the Declaration of Independence or \u2018Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.\u2019 The class runs backwards chronologically, and we start with current work,&nbsp;including <strong>David Foster Wallace\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Consider the Lobster.\u2019 If&nbsp;you\u2019ve&nbsp;never read it,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;very entertaining.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/courses\/coursedescriptions.aspx?subcode=LIT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">courses<\/a>&nbsp;include&nbsp;Multicultural Literature&nbsp;(LIT 400),&nbsp;Adolescent&nbsp;Literature&nbsp;(LIT 302)&nbsp;and Visual Approaches to Literature: The Graphic Novel&nbsp;(LIT 313), the&nbsp;program\u2019s&nbsp;most popular offering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/technology\/game-design-development.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Game Design<\/a>&nbsp;students&nbsp;take the&nbsp;class, but&nbsp;so do&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/education\/middle-level-education-bs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Middle&nbsp;Level Education<\/a>&nbsp;majors \u2014 anyone who is going to work with narration as a part of their job,\u201d&nbsp;she says.&nbsp;\u201cWhen we talk about&nbsp;what\u2019s&nbsp;under the hood in a work of art, graphic novels encourage not just an exploration of literary devices but of visual devices and color theory, too. For instance, why is red so often a color associated with bad guys? From Mars\/Ares to the Sith, what does it tell us when a character is associated with red?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nonfiction Literature (LIT 410), students&nbsp;learn&nbsp;to \u201capply the tools of literature to nonfiction\u201d because&nbsp;\u201cnonfiction is presented as&nbsp;objective, but&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;still subjective,\u201d Dr. Cottle says, explaining how the ability to&nbsp;\u201cidentify&nbsp;tone,&nbsp;theme,&nbsp;symbolism&nbsp;and other literary devices\u201d&nbsp;helps&nbsp;students&nbsp;\u201canalyze authorial intent.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese skills are essential in an age of misinformation,\u201d she adds.&nbsp;\u201cAnd&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;fun to practice them on really&nbsp;good writing,&nbsp;like <strong>Hunter S. Thompson<\/strong>, <strong>E.B. White<\/strong> and <strong>Martin Luther King Jr.<\/strong>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Humanities&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.&nbsp;Cottle has given a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=O1KZJRofE0E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tedx Talk<\/a>&nbsp;on the humanities and considers&nbsp;poetry her \u201cfirst love.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhere technology wants to run apace and doesn\u2019t care about the impact on people, the humanities take a deep look at how people are impacted by events and change,\u201d she says, citing \u201cFrankenstein\u201d by <strong>Mary Shelley<\/strong> as \u201cone of the first examples of this kind of&nbsp;exploration.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe humanities&nbsp;help us to make sense of those events,&nbsp;whether&nbsp;we are looking through the lens of history, economics, culture,&nbsp;literature&nbsp;or art,\u201d&nbsp;Dr. Cottle says.&nbsp;\u201cThat perspective is important today as we see large cultural shifts and divides:&nbsp;How do we get folks to focus on what they can do to build a better world for everyone or even improve their little corner of the world?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a professor and program chair, she has been making a&nbsp;difference&nbsp;at&nbsp;WilmU&nbsp;since&nbsp;2002.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking at&nbsp;WilmU&nbsp;has been transformative for me: I\u2019ve gotten to live a life of ideas while also helping people achieve their goals,\u201d&nbsp;Dr. Cottle&nbsp;says. \u201cI get to indulge my curiosity and learn about best practices&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;things that make the classroom experience better for students as well as enhance their learning and ability to transfer what&nbsp;they\u2019ve&nbsp;learned into other tasks or
