Now a <a href=\"https:\/\/law.wilmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wilmington University School of Law<\/a> student, she\u2019s making the most of another externship, this time at Delaware\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/courts.delaware.gov\/childadvocate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of the Child Advocate<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWilmington has given me such amazing opportunities to be involved in the Delaware legal community,\u201d says Macmillan, who was a criminal justice major in college. \u201cIt\u2019s just a very one-on-one personal experience.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She writes research memos, drafts court orders as needed, and attends meetings, including one with the state Senate Judiciary Committee about the Delaware Victims\u2019 Bill of Rights and Victims\u2019 Compensation Assistance Program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a great example of how the legal system interacts and is intertwined with the legislative system,\u201d Macmillan says. \u201cThe Office of the Child Advocate does more than just advocate in court for children \u2014 it advocates for the very laws that protect them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s one of nine second-year WilmU Law students enjoying externships this semester. The others are working for judges, a law firm, the American Civil Liberties Union, Community Legal Aid Society and Department of Justice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Law School Externships Provide Hands-On Learning\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"377\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dalton-Lahti-377x480.jpeg\" alt=\"Dalton Lahti\" class=\"wp-image-18301\" style=\"width:150px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dalton-Lahti-377x480.jpeg 377w, https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dalton-Lahti-196x250.jpeg 196w, https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dalton-Lahti-768x979.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dalton-Lahti-1205x1536.jpeg 1205w, https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dalton-Lahti-1607x2048.jpeg 1607w, https:\/\/blog.wilmu.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dalton-Lahti.jpeg 2009w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dalton Lahti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re dipping their toe, so to speak, into what it\u2019s like to practice law,\u201d says <strong>Kimberly Gattuso<\/strong>, <strong>J.D.<\/strong>, the associate dean for <a href=\"https:\/\/law.wilmu.edu\/professional-development\/law-experiential-learning.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experiential learning<\/a>. \u201cThey really get a glimpse into what the day-to-day activity is like as a lawyer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For WilmU Law student <strong>Dalton Lahti<\/strong>, it\u2019s been \u201can amazing opportunity for hands-on learning\u201d with U.S. Magistrate <strong>Judge Sherry Fallon<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of my biggest takeaways so far in my externship is the importance of clarity and organization in legal writing,\u201d says Lahti, who earned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/behavioralscience\/law-policy-and-political-science.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">B.S. in Law, Policy and Political Science<\/a> from Wilmington University. \u201cAnother major takeaway is just how interconnected Delaware truly is and the importance of a good reputation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He appreciates \u201cthe opportunity not only to practice what we have been learning in school but also to learn from exceptional legal professionals who are at the pinnacle of their field.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gattuso<\/strong> remembers her own externship with a Kent County judge and encourages the legal community to get involved with WilmU Law programs. She&#8217;s excited to work with judges, law firms, nonprofits, government agencies and other groups to offer comprehensive experiential learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe impact a host organization can have on a student at this stage will be something that stays with them their entire career,\u201d Gattuso says.
