Struggling with depression, he chose to forgo a life-sustaining device.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMental health is so undertreated,\u201d says Metcalf, who&#8217;s pursuing a combined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/health\/psychiatric-mental-health-nurse-practitioner-certificate-curriculum.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Post-Master&#8217;s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certificate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/health\/dnp-with-post-masters-certificates.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Doctor of Nursing Practice degree<\/a> at Wilmington University. \u201cI want mental health to be at the forefront.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transformative Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WilmU\u2019s accessible, affordable PMHNP certificate program, available in an online format, prepares you to provide comprehensive mental health services. You\u2019ll learn theory, practice and evidence-based interventions from faculty who are clinical practitioners with a holistic approach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The curriculum emphasizes a strong foundation in neurobiology and psychopharmacology through innovative courses rated highly by students. <strong>Dr. Sarah Benner<\/strong>, a practicing pharmacist, leads Psychopharmacology for the Advanced Practice Nurse Across the Lifespan (<a href=\"https:\/\/iq2prod1.smartcatalogiq.com\/en\/catalogs\/wilmington-university\/current\/graduate-catalog\/courses\/grn-graduate-nursing\/7000\/grn-7201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GRN 7201<\/a>), while Neurobiology of Psychiatric Disorders (<a href=\"https:\/\/iq2prod1.smartcatalogiq.com\/en\/catalogs\/wilmington-university\/current\/graduate-catalog\/courses\/grn-graduate-nursing\/7000\/grn-7202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GRN 7202<\/a>) is led by Biology faculty member <strong>Dr. Robert Bauchwitz<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Natalie Hart<\/strong>, practicing PMHNP and faculty member in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/health\/indexh.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Health Professions and Natural Sciences<\/a> (COHPNS).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining core courses are led by experienced COHPNS faculty and practicing PMHNPs including Dr. Hart, <strong>Dr. Dana Olive<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Khatera Jahan<\/strong>.<strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur passion really is preserving the heart of what psychiatric nursing is. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners are among the fastest growing essential health care providers, with <a href=\"https:\/\/research.com\/careers\/psychiatric-nurse-practitioner-salary-by-state#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research.com<\/a> reporting an average salary of $154,475.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important for people to realize that the goal of the nurse practitioner is not just to prescribe medications. That is a common misconception,\u201d Dr. Olive says. It\u2019s to ensure \u201cwe are addressing not just medically what might be happening neurochemically but also psychologically.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PMHNP Certification&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WilmU\u2019s program prepares you for licensure and board certification, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/outcomes\/academicaffairs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100% pass rate<\/a> on PMHNP exams. Students complete 750 practicum hours in various settings over the course of four semesters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe try to be very supportive of our students,\u201d Dr. Olive says. \u201cWe recognize that they\u2019re busy working adults with families. I think it\u2019s important for them to know that we see them and we hear them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students appreciate Dr. Olive\u2019s genuine concern and commitment to their success.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think Dr. Olive needs to clone herself. She\u2019s so smart. She\u2019s so supportive.
