A WilmU graduate himself, he holds a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/business\/dba.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Doctor of Business Administration<\/a> degree and chairs the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/business\/indexb.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Business\u2019<\/a> marketing program.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q: How has marketing evolved over the years, and where do you see it heading in the future?<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Marketing has evolved significantly over the years, shifting from product-centric, traditional channels like print and TV to a more consumer-centric, digital approach. With the rise of the internet and social media, marketing has become increasingly personalized through tools like SEO, email campaigns and data analytics. This shift allows businesses to interact directly with consumers, offering targeted messaging. Looking ahead, the future of marketing will be shaped by advancements in AI, machine learning, and immersive technologies like AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality), enabling more personalized, data-driven and interactive experiences. Ethical concerns around data privacy and trust will also play a key role in shaping the landscape.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q:  What inspired you to pursue a career in academia?<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After spending some time in corporate America and consulting immediately following my undergraduate degree, I dedicated eight years to building and growing my apparel business. One day while in a networking group meeting in Baltimore, someone mentioned that whenever I talk about my business I say \u201clike\u201d or \u201cfinancials,\u201d but when I talk about the one course that I taught at the local community college, I glow and used terms like \u201clove.\u201d My decision to pursue a full-time career in academia was driven by a deep passion for knowledge and a desire to contribute to the intellectual growth of others. I believe that academia offers a unique environment where ideas can be explored, debated and refined, and this intellectual freedom aligns with my personal values and aspirations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q:  What do you find most rewarding about working with students?<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most rewarding aspect of working with students is witnessing their transformation over time. Helping students navigate the complexities of their subject matter and watching them grow in their understanding, confidence and critical-thinking skills is incredibly fulfilling. There is a profound sense of satisfaction in guiding students to realize their potential and seeing them develop both academically and personally.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q:  How do you integrate real-world experiences into your curriculum?<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, I connect our adjunct team with business owners and those within the marketing industry. We will bring a real-life, real-time project into the mix, often replacing an assignment or discussion \u2014 creating a logo, marketing campaign, providing feedback, etc. to a business owner, getting feedback from the owner and instructor, and possibly seeing your work implemented immediately. We have an industry interview in one of our upper-level courses and have LinkedIn built into the program, where students leave with an All-Star LinkedIn account.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote wu-blockquote-simple is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I believe that academia offers a unique environment where ideas can be explored, debated and refined, and this intellectual freedom aligns with my personal values and aspirations.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014 <em>Dr. Scott Walton<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q:  What advice do you give students pursuing careers in marketing?<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Discover a passion that drives you, as marketing is a vital aspect across all sectors \u2014 whether in small businesses, self-employment, large enterprises or nonprofits. Find something that excites you so deeply that you wake each morning eager to embrace the day, not waiting for the weekend but enjoying every day equally.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q:  What is the most memorable WilmU experience you\u2019ve had?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a challenging question, as there have been many memorable moments. However, one that stands out is my first WilmU graduation, where I had the privilege of serving as a graduation marshal. It was an honor to share that moment with our graduating students just before they walked across the stage. I couldn\u2019t help but smile widely as I witnessed their nervous excitement, smiles, embraces, tears and all the emotions that accompanied such a significant occasion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q:  What do you love about WilmU?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I love the sense of community at WilmU. My experience at Wilmington University has always been centered around community. Whether as a student, an adjunct or now as a member of the College of Business, each role I\u2019ve held has been focused on fostering a strong community and has been thoroughly rewarding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Q:  What\u2019s something most people don\u2019t know about you?<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have had the privilege of being deeply involved with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopewellcancersupport.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HopeWell Cancer Support<\/a> for over two decades and currently serve as the vice chair on the board of directors. This remarkable organization has been a beacon of hope for those affected by cancer \u2014 creating a compassionate community where individuals, families and friends can come together. HopeWell fosters an environment that not only encourages the sharing of vital information but also nurtures the development of lasting support systems. The work they do goes beyond support, it provides a place where hope flourishes.
