Just like an animal&#8217;s den provides comfort and safety, WilmU&#8217;s Den nurtures and supports its Wildcats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor a student, it could be the difference of doing well in school and dropping out of school,\u201d says <strong>Dr. Regina Allen-Sharpe<\/strong>, WilmU\u2019s assistant vice president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/studentaffairs\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">student affairs<\/a> and dean of students. \u201cI just could not stand the thought of someone here being hungry.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She officially opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/food\/emergency-food-resources.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Den<\/a> in 2022 out of kindness, compassion and a deep personal understanding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up, \u201cfood pantries were something that we visited all the time, so it\u2019s very, very close to my heart,\u201d says Dr. Allen-Sharpe. \u201cWhen someone says to me, to Regina Sharpe, \u2018I\u2019m hungry; I haven\u2019t eaten since yesterday lunch or yesterday breakfast\u2019 \u2014 I know exactly what the feeling is. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tackling Food Insecurity&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/hope.temple.edu\/research\/hope-center-basic-needs-survey\/preview-2023-24-student-basic-needs-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey<\/a> by Temple University&#8217;s Hope Center for Student Basic Needs, 41% of college students experience food insecurity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFood insecurities are real for college students, and it\u2019s not an age bracket. It is college students: 18 or 48,\u201d Dr. Allen-Sharpe says. \u201cIt\u2019s a real need when folks are trying to better themselves. And if we can help to make things just a little bit easier for them, I think we all play a role in that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s part of the Wilmington University mission. We want to support our students in every way possible,\u201d says <strong>Dr. Taylor McCusker<\/strong>, director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/studentlife\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">student life<\/a>. \u201cThis is a resource that we offer to all of our students, and they just need to ask for it.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources for Students&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a student or you know a student who could benefit from The Den, simply fill out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmu.edu\/studentaffairs\/request-assistance.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">request form<\/a> online. Local Wildcats can then pick up bags of shelf-stable food, toilet paper and paper towels from the Pratt Student Center in New Castle. For distance learners, The Den runs a virtual food bank of sorts, sending similar supplies via Instacart.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen someone calls in or reaches out to us for food, we do what we can to help them. We have never not said yes,\u201d Dr. Allen-Sharpe says. \u201cEven if you\u2019re not food insecure per se, you might not have money for lunch, or you might be running low. We can give you a little something to combat that hunger.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To further fight hunger, The Den offers extra packaged food before school breaks and fresh holiday meals several times a year, both in person and across the miles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents love that,\u201d Dr. Allen-Sharpe says. \u201cThey can enjoy those holidays without incurring extra expenses.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for The Den\u2019s expenses, she not only looks forward to the canned food drive but also welcomes food drop-offs at the Student Life desk in the Pratt Student Center and <a href=\"https:\/\/my.onecause.com\/fundraiser\/organizations\/sf-001C000000zxFcnIAE\/fundraisers\/fundraiser:42ef73da-96bf-4a28-a24d-bc2b29b61582\/text2give\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monetary donations<\/a> year-round.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always a good time.
