You\u2019re a lawyer entering a conference room to depose someone in a civil case. You need to know how to build a rapport, ask the right questions, control the narrative and find inconsistencies \u2014 skills <a href=\"https:\/\/law.wilmu.edu\/index.aspx\">Wilmington University School of Law<\/a> students displayed at the first Syracuse Deposition Competition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to show others that we are prepared and formidable with regard to the skills needed to succeed in the legal community,\u201d says J.D. candidate <strong>Christine Sauers<\/strong>. \u201cIt was also an opportunity to stretch ourselves. Deposition skills and techniques are very critical in the profession. It was such a great chance to be exposed to those skills at this point in our education.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Syracuse University College of Law hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/law.syracuse.edu\/academics\/advocacy-training\/intercollegiate-advocacy-competitions\/syracuse-deposition-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual event<\/a>, and WilmU Law was one of 12 schools competing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were coached by seasoned professionals. Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/law.wilmu.edu\/faculty\/veronica-finkelstein.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Finkelstein<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/law.wilmu.edu\/faculty\/kimberly-richardson.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richardson<\/a> <\/strong>graciously shared their time and expertise,\u201d says <strong>Dr. Marisa Rauscher<\/strong>, a WilmU Law student and professor of educational psychology at Neumann University. \u201cWhen game day arrived, Wilmington University Law showed up ready to compete.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Rauscher and her teammates placed third, just missing the semifinals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m so proud of our team,\u201d says Kimberly Richardson, a WilmU Law associate professor. \u201cThey worked so hard and performed like seasoned attorneys.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legal Education Beyond the Classroom&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are eager to learn more and compete again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis experience meant so much to me. It has opened my eyes to what a deposition can look like and what goes into the process prior to the deposition,\u201d says <strong>Kendal Parliament<\/strong>, a J.D. candidate. \u201cI also enjoyed receiving feedback from the tenured lawyers and judges who were judging the competition.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt made me feel like a practicing lawyer!
