Dr. Paul Thomas Clements, an internationally recognized expert in gang violence and danger assessment, is the new president of the American Academy of Forensic Nursing (AFN).

He says his long, successful career in nursing and academia is rooted in his studies at Wilmington University, where he earned his B.S.N. in 1992.

“WilmU’s BSN program was the foundation of everything that followed in my nursing career,” he says. “The support, flexibility, and real-world focus of the program not only gave me the confidence to pursue graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania but also shaped my identity as a nurse, scholar, and educator. What I learned at WilmU stayed with me — guiding me as I earned my MSN and PhD, and continuing to influence how I teach, mentor, and lead in academic nursing today.”

Dr. Clements is the coordinator and clinical professor for the DNP program at Texas A&M University. His work includes vulnerability risk assessment, workplace violence prevention, and trauma-informed care. He has done extensive consulting on reducing violence, assessing threats, and mitigating the psychological impact of interpersonal violence. His upcoming book, “Violence Against Women: Intersectional Case Studies,” is scheduled for release later this year.

AFN works to expand and advance forensic nursing by integrating research into clinical care, enhancing education, and advocating for policy changes at the federal and local levels.
