Thomas Burt that the Wilmington University 2025 commencement ceremony.

Thomas Burt was the 2025 commencement speaker for the WilmU College of Technology, Graduate Programs Ceremony. His time at Wilmington University in the M.S. in Digital Communication program deepened his passion for the field of communication. It also opened new doors, leading to an internship with the Public Health Management Corporation and eventually to his current role as a divisional client service manager at Bayada Home Health Care.

Q: Can you tell us about your WilmU journey?

Absolutely! My journey began after graduating from Rowan University with my bachelor’s degree in 2020. I was eager to start my career, but I also felt a strong desire to continue my education. I began researching universities that would allow me to pursue a master’s degree while maintaining full-time employment. That search led me to Wilmington University.

My experience at WilmU was outstanding. The professors were not only highly knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive. What stood out to me most was their real-world experience beyond academia. That practical insight significantly enhanced my learning and helped me better understand the application of concepts within my field.

Q: What prompted you to choose the M.S. in Digital Communication program?

The M.S. in Digital Communication program aligned perfectly with my professional goals. While my undergraduate studies focused on rhetoric and interpersonal communication, WilmU’s program gave me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in digital communication. It also allowed me to specialize in health care communication — an area directly relevant to my current role as a divisional client service manager in the health care sector.

Q: Did you have a favorite course and/or instructor?

Yes! My favorite instructor was Dr. Timothy Day. As an online student, it was incredibly meaningful to have a professor who was not only engaging but also deeply invested in his students’ success. His feedback was always insightful, and his mentorship had a significant impact on me.

One special memory I’ll always carry is from graduation, where I had the honor of serving as the commencement speaker for the College of Technology. Dr. Day was the first person to greet me as I stepped off the stage. He and Dr. Janice Colvin both came over to congratulate me — affirming that I had made the right choice in choosing Wilmington University.

“As a full-time working professional, the ability to complete my degree at my own pace through online courses was a game changer.”

Q: Did you have any meaningful hands-on learning experiences or opportunities to apply what you were learning in class to your current position?

Absolutely. In my current role, communication is at the core of everything I do. The skills I learned in the program — especially around digital and interpersonal communication — directly influence how I build relationships and manage client services. Online class discussions with peers also gave me valuable new perspectives that helped me become a more effective communicator both virtually and in person.

Q: Now that you’ve completed your degree, what’s next for you?

While I don’t have a definitive next step yet, earning my master’s has already helped me advance into my current role. I’m excited to see where this position leads. After taking some time to reflect and recharge, I’m strongly considering pursuing a doctorate in communications.

Q: What do you love about Wilmington University?

I truly appreciated the flexibility WilmU offered. As a full-time working professional, the ability to complete my degree at my own pace through online courses was a game changer. Despite the virtual setting, professors were always accessible — whether through Zoom or email — providing a learning experience that felt as engaging and supportive as in-person classes.

Q: Do you have any words of wisdom, advice or encouragement for people who are thinking about taking their education further?

My advice would be: It’s never too late to invest in your education. If it’s something you’re passionate about, go for it. The journey may be challenging — balancing work, life and academics — but the reward is well worth it. There’s no better feeling than walking across that stage, knowing all your hard work, sleepless nights and sacrifices led to something so meaningful and lasting.

Q: Lastly, is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for helping you achieve your goals?

Yes, I’d like to acknowledge a few important people. First and foremost, my mom — her unwavering support throughout my master’s journey was everything. From cheering me on to proofreading my papers, she was always there. I also want to thank my girlfriend, Lauren. She inspired me to go back to school and supported me every step of the way. From late-night study sessions to moments of self-doubt, she believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. I’m also grateful to my friends and extended family, who were always there to celebrate the wins and offer encouragement along the way. Their support made this experience truly memorable.
