Cultivating Social and Emotional Intelligence

Dr. Shiloh Andrus

The Master of Science in Professional Studies program is designed to cultivate modern leaders who can navigate nuances in multicultural settings. To that end, there’s a new emphasis on nurturing social and emotional intelligence, skills that help leaders thrive in a global market.

“We have been looking ahead at the workforce of 2030 to see what employers will be looking for. They will be demanding a skill set that includes social and emotional intelligence,” says Dr. Shiloh Andrus, chair of the MPS and Behavioral Science programs. She notes that 90% of top performers in the workplace are high in emotional intelligence, according to recent research.

The courses are focused on enabling students to develop efficiency in managing and achieving work-life balance, managing burnout in their own lives, and navigating organizations in times of change and crisis while operating ethically.

“It’s not just for the MPS program. These courses could be electives in other graduate programs,” Dr. Andrus says.

The knowledge gained by developing social and emotional intelligence skills can help leaders emerge from challenges with strength, wisdom, and resilience.

“It’s not just being about to push through crisis,” Dr. Andrus says. “It’s about being able to rise through that.”
