José Matthews is the second oldest of seven children and the first in his family to earn a college degree — a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Wilmington University.
“While serving as an executive assistant in a hospital, I really fell in love with health care operations and health care in general,” says Matthews, who now works as a business development liaison at the Rockford Center, a Delaware behavioral health hospital. “WilmU has allowed me to be the best that I can be, and I’ve been able to walk through a lot of doors I don’t think I would have (otherwise).”
He chose Health Sciences because it touches on “all aspects of health care.”
“Health care is expansive, which is kind of the beauty of it,” Matthews says. “The possibilities are endless.”
A Flexible Health Sciences Degree
WilmU offers Health Sciences degree programs at the associate, bachelor’s and master’s levels, with courses available in person and online.
“A Health Sciences student has a strong foundation in science and health care principles and can be an important part of any health care professional team,” says Dr. Angela Herman, program director.
The fully online A.S. in Health Sciences prepares you to enter the health care industry in clinical support roles with average salaries ranging from $30,000 to $85,000. For example, you could become a clinical systems specialist, health care practice manager, medical records technician, personal trainer or care management assistant.
This innovative associate degree is part of a series of stackable credentials. Through Dual-Credit ADVANTAGE™, you can apply select courses to a variety of WilmU certificate programs, allowing you to earn a resume-boosting certificate and your associate degree simultaneously. Continue your education by applying your A.S. degree credits to WilmU’s B.S. in Health Sciences.
Careers in Health Science
The B.S. in Health Sciences “is a great springboard into upper-level health care professions,” Dr. Herman says. “There’s a wealth of higher-level clinical professions that you can go to. Having the B.S. in Health Sciences provides the first step.”
A Health Sciences bachelor’s degree qualifies you for jobs making $40,000 to $100,000 in pharmaceutical sales, nonprofit health care management, medical device support, clinical research, health education and other rewarding fields.
Go even further and accelerate from a B.S. to an M.S. in Health Sciences by incorporating master’s level coursework without additional tuition costs.
The M.S. in Health Sciences provides the leadership skills you need for specialized clinical and advanced administrative roles paying $50,000 to $150,000. Build a career as an epidemiologist, environmental health scientist, population health program manager, postsecondary teacher, medical and health services manager, or health promotion specialist.
A Fulfilling Health Care Career
“A Health Sciences degree offers a wide range of opportunities to enter health care or step into your next role,” Dr. Herman says.
At 29, Matthews looks forward to an exciting future.
“I really feel grateful both for the opportunity and the institution,” he says. “Folks should feel incredibly proud to be part of WilmU.”
