Business is global, and to succeed in business, you need to communicate well — often with people from around the world. That’s why Wilmington University is introducing its second core College of Business course in Spanish immersion format: Business Communications, BBM 320.

“WilmU is offering a fantastic opportunity for students to enhance their language skills while learning vital business communication strategies in a real-world context,” says Dr. Sandy Flores, a bilingual leadership development professional who will teach the Spanish immersion section. “I highly encourage all interested students to consider enrolling in this course and take advantage of this unique learning experience.”

Designed for students who speak both Spanish and English but prefer instruction in Spanish, the new Online Live course will be offered in Fall 2024, Block 2, as part of a growing bilingual curriculum. In 2023, WilmU launched its first Spanish immersion section of Principles of Management, BBM 201.

Benefits of Being Bilingual

“Being bilingual increases not only cultural awareness but also improves academic performance,” says Dr. Guillermina Gonzalez, the assistant chair of undergraduate business programs. “It increases your chances of being hired. Being bilingual implies that you have a lot more to offer and, therefore, you have better job prospects.”

The Spanish immersion section of Business Communications features instruction in Spanish with assignments, readings and student presentations in English. It’s ideal for people who want to increase their comprehension or improve language acquisition.

“In talking to potential students, the minute they know this option is available, they are interested, not only Latinos,” says Dr. Gonzalez. “It’s a wise decision to speak Spanish these days in the U.S.” because the Latino population is the largest minority.

Master Valuable Communication Skills

This core College of Business (COB) course and its credits can be applied to all COB certificates and select undergraduate degree programs, including Accounting, Applied Business, Marketing and Organizational Leadership. You’ll learn to master oral and written communication skills — such as writing reports, preparing effective presentations and following business etiquette — while embracing diversity and inclusion. Other key topics include overcoming communication barriers and examining cross-cultural communication.

The Online Live format means “you are not only interacting with the instructor but also with fellow classmates, which enhances the experience a great deal,” says Dr. Gonzalez, who describes Dr. Flores as caring and prepared. “She understands the culture. She speaks the language, is easily relatable. What else can you ask for from an instructor, frankly?”

And Dr. Flores can’t wait to begin. “This is going to be so exciting!” she says.

¡Comunicaciones de Negocios, BBM 320, ahora con nuevo formato de inmersión en español! Las clases empiezan en el Otoño de 2024, Bloque 2.
