In a global economy, ensuring the cybersecurity of overseas shipping is a vital concern. Dr. Maureen McWhite, an adjunct instructor in the College of Technology at Wilmington University, was among the experts who spoke at a recent conference at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) headquarters in London.
IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping. Dr. McWhite has worked for more than 30 years in the information technology industry in the private and public sectors and is a sought-after speaker.
“I am all about supply chain cybersecurity, particularly for the transportation sector: trucking, maritime, rail, and air. Maritime security threats are prevalent, and we need to protect our ports,” she says.
Dr. McWhite spoke on access control to international ship and port facility security codes, perimeter control, and lighting from a cybersecurity perspective. Among the attendees were representatives from Papua New Guinea, Australia, Singapore, India, and other nations. Dr. McWhite also presented at cybersecurity conferences and workshops in the United States, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
