As part of a Forensic Nursing course for her Master of Science in Nursing Leadership: Legal Nurse Consultant program, Ruchoma Domosh conducted extensive research into child maltreatment among medically fragile children.
In a term paper she explained that this maltreatment seldom has a single cause. More often it results from multiple factors, including child behaviors and limitations; caregivers stressed by personal, economic, social and cultural pressures; and limited community resources.
She also noted that education is critical in training pediatric nurses to recognize abuse and neglect among vulnerable patient populations.
The paper impressed her instructor, Eileen Caraker, who encouraged Domosh to present it to a wider audience by submitting it to a professional journal. As a result, Domosh’s work was published as a peer-reviewed article in the March/April 2021 issue of the Journal of Pediatric Nursing.
