Health Science Interns Get Hands-on Experience

In the rapidly evolving field of health care, people with health sciences degrees are playing a greater role in care management.

WilmU students are getting hands-on experience through the University’s relationship with Christiana Care Health System. Last semester, two students completed internships at Christiana Care. There currently are three interns working in the health system, in the emergency department, trauma care, and cardiology.

“We are seeing a trend that more and more care facilities are using people in care management roles,” says Dr. Angela Herman, chair of Health Sciences in the College of Health Professions. “It’s a marvelous opportunity for Health Science students to work in a place where they can eventually find jobs.”

Dr. Herman connected with Patty Resnik, vice president of care management and Carelink CareNow Operations at Christiana Care, with the idea for the internships. The interns are assisting patients in managing their care across the continuum, from admission to discharge. Interns perform such tasks as supporting the nursing staff, facilitating follow-up appointments, and assisting patients in obtaining medical equipment.

WilmU’s multimedia team assisted the Office of Work-Integrated Learning by interviewing the interns. Dr. Herman spoke on camera about the program.

She notes that interns benefit from working in a major health system with a diverse range of patients. One intern who is interested in end-of-life care was able to spend time in the palliative care unit.

“They are getting valuable work experience, as well as a chance to pursue their special interests,” she says.
