Laura Malmstrom, a Wilmington University alumna and adjunct faculty member, is the 2018 Delaware Counselor of the Year.

For the past 12 years, she has served as school counselor at Sarah Pyle Academy in Wilmington, a designated breakthrough school which focuses on the needs of students who have not succeeded in traditional educational settings and are in danger of dropping out. SPA combines personalized learning, job experience and college readiness skills.

Malmstrom earned her master’s degree in School Counseling at WilmU and has served as lead mentor for school counselors in the Christina School District for more than 10 years. Her experience includes working as an adjunct Psychology professor at WilmU.

“School counselors are the game changers, the work they do is essential to creating a school environment where students have the coping skills and strategies they need to effectively engage in learning,” she said upon receiving the award in April.

The award is presented by the American School Counselor Association and honors counselors who are running a comprehensive school counseling program at either the elementary, middle or high school level.
