When you attend Wilmington University as an online student, there’s no need to feel left out of campus life. Through Blackboard, you can join a campus club or organization and participate online. Simply log on to Blackboard, and click the organizations tab at the top of the page.
From the Green Team (an environmental service group open to students, faculty and staff) to the Legal Studies Student Group and the Digital Film Making Club, you’re probably going to find an organization that suits your interests. Is your hobby, passion, or major not on the Organizations list? Student Life has a procedure for new student groups – start by filling out this New Student Organization Request for Approval Form.
The first group online students will encounter is the Online Student Organization, in which all online students are automatically enrolled when they matriculate into Wilmington University. This group is a place for online students to network in a relaxed atmosphere and participate in online activities.
You may want to watch the overview video to get a feel for how organizations work in Blackboard. Many organizations are self-enrolled – you enroll yourself in the group, whereas other groups you may find you’re automatically a member, based on your major.
Please take in some helpful tips regarding assignments and blackboard
Read all directions to the assignment and read carefully to meet assignment criteria
Some courses may only have one attempt per assignment. If you have a problem uploading and are not able to attempt a second time, you will need to contact your instructor and ask to clear the first attempt
Do not submit your file as .odt or .pages file format. Please save your document as recommended .rtf, .docx, or .doc file format to upload
Do not name your file with any periods in the naming convention. It is a good idea to name your document with your last name and name of the assignment. File names should not contain blank spaces or special characters.

At the start of the summer semester of 2011, we upgraded the Blackboard system to version 9.1. Below is a list of currently known issues relevant to students. Click here if you would like to see the complete list.
Issues with Internet Explorer 8 and Blackboard
Using Internet Explorer 8 with Blackboard will cause problems for students attempting to submit tests or use the file upload feature. To avoid these issues it is suggested to use Mozilla Firefox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html or change to the “compatibility mode” in IE8 (Tools > compatibility mode” in IE8 (Tools > Compatibility View Settings > Check ‘Display all websites in Compatibility View’ > Close. You will need to close IE8 and reopen the browser before the change takes effect.)
Copy and Paste
Copy and pasting text from Word to a Bb text editor or discussion post causes formatting problems in Blackboard.
Blackboard offers a Paste from Word Mash Up Tool. Click this link for the video tutorial.
Removed from version 9
Faculty should use assignment manager for file uploads.
External links – now called URL
URL link may not open for students in IE.
Please use the Option, “Open in New Window”
System errors occur when trying to access submitted assignments
Some columns defaulted back to NO CATEGORY. Once the category is changed to assignment, etc., the submitted assignments are accessible.
Can’t view column information
Quick Column Information – can access in Internet Explorer but not Firefox.
System error occurs when trying to access certain areas of Grade Center
Change the ordering of one column temporarily to force a re-organization of Grade Center. Sometimes this will resolve an issue causing a system error.
Removed from version 9
Faculty can encourage the use of a blog , if an avatar is added under personal information then a photo is shared in blog.
Tools – Course Menu
Tool not available in course menu
The “tools” area was removed after upgrade (was in lower box below course menu in version 8). Faculty can make a Tools menu item for courses prior to SU 2011. All current and future courses will have the tools area as a default option in the snapshot course.
YouTube Mashup tool
If you choose to pick the Embed Video player option, Firefox will not display video properly
Keep the default “thumbnail view” for the YouTube player option.
If you have too many courses listed on your Blackboard Welcome Page and would like to hide the old ones, here’s how you can create a custom view of the courses in your account by using the “pencil” icon.
Look for the pencil icon at the top-right corner of the My Courseslist or in the Courses tab. Click the pencil to toggle the checkboxes to customize your view. If you want to display “hidden” courses again, use the pencil icon to bring them back. Make sure you uncheck the “Announcements” box, also, or those will still be there and not connected to their course.
Logging off of Blackboard
Did you know that if you just close your access to Blackboard by clicking that little “X”, that you are not logged off the system? This could have serious implications if you are on a public computer or someone else uses yours. Always click on “logout” to make you Blackboard account is protected.
