As reported in the summer 2016 issue of WilmU Magazine, the University Athletics department hosted a Military Appreciation Day during Wildcat baseball and softball games in April. Ceremonies included an honorary first pitch, a color guard, and a special rendition of the national anthem. The teams also sold special American flag-embedded WilmU t-shirts at the events and raised additional donations, for a total of $1,400. On June 21, representatives of the baseball and softball teams presented a check for that amount to the Wilmington VA Medical Center and its Community Living Center.

As a result of those efforts, the Athletics department received the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference 2015-16 Community Engagement Award. This marks the first time WilmU has won the award, which includes $1,000 to be used for future community engagement initiatives. Earning the conference award makes the University eligible for the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence, to be presented at the national convention in January. Wu
