Allison Laurant is a financial coach with $tand By Me, a statewide financial empowerment program located in the Pratt Student Center at the New Castle campus. Her goal is to help students understand and manage their personal finances.
After working with so many — she’s served 552 students since she came to WilmU in 2012 — it’s become apparent to her that personal finances and money management can be huge distractions.
“As a coach I have the joy of helping students find and commit to solutions they may have not discovered on their own,” says Laurant. “In addition to personal one-on–one coaching, I also facilitate workshops for our First Year Experience students, where I present real-life financial scenarios to help them identify places they may need additional support, such as creating a budget or establishing credit.”
Laurant loves what she does, and she embraces every student’s challenge as an opportunity. “I’m always inspired by students’ accomplishments,” she says. “If I help one student become more financially responsible, I’m overjoyed and motivated to continue.”
Financial coaching is not limited to students, however. $tand By Me is also available to WilmU faculty and employees. Laurant has even helped two employees to become homeowners.
“For most adult learners with jobs and families, scheduling can often be very challenging,” she says. “Once a student understands that $tand By Me services are of value, they’re often eager to schedule and become longstanding customers.” WU
