The Write Stuff

Dr. Joseph L. Crossen, the College of Education’s chair of doctoral educational leadership program, was one of just 10 Delaware writers to win a competition that enabled him to participate in the Prose Section of the 2014 Cape Henlopen Poetry and Prose Writers Retreat. Sponsored by the Delaware Division of the Arts, the retreat offered participants the opportunity to work closely with acclaimed, published authors who provided constructive criticism. The contest necessitated serious commitment: Crossen had to submit 10 pages of writing, and offered all of one story and part of another.

Despite his myriad teaching and administrative duties, Crossen writes every day, “even if it’s for just a few minutes,” he says. His favorite genre to write is actually fiction, but when it comes to a favorite to read, he likes variety.

This is Crossen’s second writing award. He won a similar competition for his work in 2010 after submitting for poetry writing, earning kudos for several of his original poems.
