About Our University
Wilmington University is a private, non-profit university that offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of career areas. The University began with a charter class of 194 students in 1968 and now enrolls a diverse student body numbering more than 13,000 annually.
Founded as Wilmington College, on September 10, 2007 the institution officially became Wilmington University after the approval of the Board of Trustees and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The name was changed to better reflect the emphasis on bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degree programs that distinguish Wilmington University from other colleges as well as to effectively communicate the full commitment and mission of the University.
The program of day, evening, and weekend classes serves traditional high school graduates as well as non-traditional adult students in need of flexible scheduling. Classes are primarily offered in 15-week, 7-week, and weekend modular formats. In addition to these face-to-face learning options, Wilmington University offers a wide array of online learning options, including fully-online degree programs and hybrid courses and programs (combining face-to-face and online learning).
Wilmington University’s main campus is located near the cities of Wilmington and historic New Castle, Delaware. The campus is easily accessible by air, rail, and bus. Our central location in the northeast/mid-Atlantic corridor of the United States provides students convenient access to the major cities of Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. Recreational areas such as beaches and ski resorts are within easy driving distance.
Additional University locations in Delaware include the Wilson Graduate Center, Middletown, Dover, Dover Air Force Base, Georgetown, Rehoboth Beach, and North Wilmington. In New Jersey, Wilmington University offers programs on Burlington County College and Cumberland County College campuses and the Joint Base Education Center for McGuire AFB/Fort Dix/Lakehurst Naval Air Station, in addition to a selection of courses offered at Salem Community College. In Maryland, select Wilmington University teacher-education degree programs are available at Cecil College’s Elkton location.
Wilmington University is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association, a non-governmental, nationally recognized organization whose members comprise approximately 500 collegiate institutions. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education accredits institutions of higher education in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other locations abroad.
College of Technology Center Cybersecurity Education (CCE)
In 2009, the College of Technology, Computer Network Security Program Chair and faculty worked to map our existing curriculum to the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) standards for Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professionals, NSTISSI 4011 and System Administrators (SA), CNSSI 4013. This process was completed through the Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation (IACE) Program. In June of 2010, we received our certification in both categories at the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
Our Computer Network Security Program (CNS) has been very active over the last three years as evidenced in our application. This includes hosting colloquia with guest speakers, including those with state and national recognition, established a student Information Assurance club with over 100 members and participating in cyber security/digital forensic competitions, winning the DC3 Challenge (undergraduate category) in 2009 and 2010.
Our vision of our Center includes our undergraduate and graduate programs in cyber security and information assurance. With the communication technology of today and our software resources, the Center is accessible virtually to our students.
One of the University strategic initiatives, is “Enhancing Academic Excellence.” Our mission includes: to “ensure that the University’s programs prepare students to begin or continue in the career, improve their competitiveness in the job market and engage in lifelong learning.” As a CAEIAE, a primary initiative is to, “promote the growth and quality of the nation’s information security workforce.”
Collaboration with our industry and our academic partners is one of the major initiatives that we believe is crucial to cybersecurity. Our faculty has partnered with Delaware Technical and Community College (DTCC) and the University of Delaware, the SANS Institute, along with the State of Delaware to host the first cyber boot camp as part of the U.S. Cyber Challenge. Our colloquia involve speakers ranging from the Secretary of Information Technology for Delaware, to the Department of Defense. Other educational institutions are invited to each. Program Chair Mark Hufe also serves on the Advisory Committee for DTCC and on their committee to develop a curriculum for a cybersecurity program. The Center can be a focal point to develop cybersecurity education and practice in Delaware and the surrounding region.
The Dean of the College of Technology is responsible for the Academic programs, standards, budget and general administration of the college activities. Mr. Mark Hufe is the Program Chair for Computer Network Security and serves as the coordinator and primary focal point for cyber security and information assurance programs and activities. He is the point of contact for colloquia, competitions, curriculum review and development and coordinating our efforts on a state and national level (i.e., member of the Delaware committee for the U.S. Cyber Challenge and coordinated our participation and establishing the Cyber Boot Camp at our Dover Campus).
The funding for colloquia, equipment, faculty and related expenses, is through the College of Technology fiscal allocation. The University allocates the funding to each college at the beginning of each fiscal year and the Dean, through the Chairs administers the budget allocation. Mr. Hufe is responsible for expenditures involving information assurance activities.
The mission of the Center for Cybersecurity Education is to promote the growth and quality of the nation’s information security workforce through higher education, information awareness campaigns, community outreach, professional development, and collaboration with academia, government and the private sector.
The College of Technology Center for Cybersecurity Education is dedicated to excellence in cybersecurity education. The Center offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer & Network Security and a Master of Science in Information Systems Technology with an Information Assurance track. Beyond the degree programs, the Center was established to further Information Awareness in the community, to foster development of cybersecurity education at partner higher education and K-12 institutions, and to work with government and private sector organizations to promote the growth and quality of the nation’s cyber security workforce.
Graduates of the College of Technology will distinguish themselves as cybersecurity professionals with superior ability, a commitment to continuous professional development, the highest ethical standards, and passion for the discipline. The Center will be recognized as a true center of excellence in cybersecurity education through collaboration and partnerships with higher education, government, and private institutions and the local community.
